Workers should not have to walk excessive distances to reach a restroom, particularly on active sites with multiple work zones.

Even when not strictly mandated by the site team’s assumptions, adding an ADA unit can solve practical problems. It offers room for workers managing bulky gear, supports broader accessibility needs, and can reduce strain on standard units during busy periods. If you are planning a longer-duration site or one with regular meetings and inspections, it is often a smart inclusion rather than an optional upgrade.

Common sizing mistakes

The most common mistake is sizing to average headcount instead of peak occupancy. If your daily workforce ranges from 18 to 34, you should not order for 18 and hope for the best. The second mistake is ignoring project growth. A site that starts with grading and utilities can look manageable with minimal coverage, then become undersized fast once more trades mobilize.

Another issue is underestimating service needs. A unit count that seems fine on paper can become a problem if the restrooms are not cleaned often enough for actual traffic. Finally, many jobs place units where delivery is easy rather than where access makes sense for the crew. That may help on day one, but it rarely helps over the life of the project.
